Important Note

Intended Use:  To be used as an aid to distinguishing prostate cancer from benign prostatic conditions, when used in conjunction with Hybritech (total) PSA for prostate cancer detection in men aged 50 years and older with total PSA between 4 and 10 ng/mL with digital rectal examination findings that are not suspicious for cancer.

Methodology

The Access Hybritech Total PSA and Free PSA assays are a paramagnetic particle, chemiluminescent immunoassay for the quantitative determination of total and free prostate specific antigens (PSA) levels in human serum using the Access Immunoassay Systems.

Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation: For 12 hours before specimen collection do not take multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin (vitamin B7), which is commonly found in hair, skin, and nail supplements and multivitamins.

Supplies: Aliquot Tube, 5 mL (T465)

Acceptable: Red top

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions: Centrifuge and aliquot serum within 3 hours of collection

  • Specimen should be processed (centrifuged) and refrigerated within 3 hours of blood draw
  • Store samples tightly stoppered at room temperature (15 to 30°C) for up to 3 hours
  • If the assay will not be completed within 3 hours, refrigerate the samples at 2 to 8° C for up to 24 hours
  • If the assay will not be completed within 24 hours, freeze at -20° C or colder
  • Frozen specimen can be stored up to 5 months before testing
