Infection Control Guidelines
ESBL or history of ESBL: Maintain Contact Precautions for ESBL for the duration of the index hospital stay when infection or colonization with this bacterium is first detected. Removing patient from Contact Precautions will be done on a case-by-case basis by infection control, taking into account the following criteria:
-
At least 6 months have elapsed since the last positive culture.
-
No current infection or signs of a clinical infection.
-
No ongoing antibiotic use, as broad spectrum antibiotic use may select for ESBL.
-
At least 2 consecutive negative rectal swab samples obtained at least 1 week apart to consider an individual negative for ESBL colonization.
