Test Code LAB265 Fecal Leukocytes

Important Note

For use on fecal samples from patients younger than 1 years of age.

Intended Use

Methylene Blue Loeffler Stain can be used to help detect the presence of white blood cells in stool specimens by giving better definition of the cells. Increased numbers of white blood cells (especially PMNs) correlate with inflammatory diarrhea caused by invasive bacteria. Fecal lactoferrin is the preferred test for inflammatory diarrhea, but a fecal wet mount can be used on children under the age of 1, since breast fed infants can have falsely elevated levels of lactoferrin.
