Specimen Requirements
If a series of tubes of CSF is available, cultures are traditionally taken from tube #1.
If only one container is submitted, it should be used for inoculating cultures first, to ensure aseptic transfer of the fluid for culture.
Submit 1 mL of spinal fluid in a screw-capped, sterile container.
Specimen Stability
Ambient: Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
