Test Code LAB280 Blood Type, Cord Blood

Intended Use

ABO/Rh typings are performed on all Cord blood samples. The Rh typing helps to determine when RhIg (Rhogam) needs to be administered to the mother. The ABO typing helps to determine if ABO incompatibility exists between mother and baby.

Specimen Requirements

A sample of cord blood that is collected by a syringe and transfered to a 10 ml serum tube to avoid contamination with maternal blood. Debris is labeled with an addressograph label containing the mother’s name, hospital number, date and time of collection, and designates the infant’s identification in multiple births (example:  Boy A). Send specimen refrigerated. Forward promptly. Specimen cannot be frozen.
