Test Code LAB7002 Culture, Peritoneal Dialysis with Gram Stain
Intended Use
In cases of suspected peritonitis in CAPD patients, peritoneal dialysate fluid is concentrated in an Isolator 10 blood culture tube and inoculated to growth supporting media for detection of an etiological agent.

Specimen Requirements
- Specimens may be submitted in a sterile container or in a sample effluent bag for culture.
- If sample submitted in sterile cup,
- Thoroughly mix the specimen in the bag
- Fill an Isolator tube or SPS tube with 10 mL
- Make cytospin gram stain slide with several drops of the fluid from the cup.
- If sample submitted in bag,
- Thoroughly mix the specimen in the bag
- Clean the sample port with alcohol pad
- Use a 12 ml syringe to extract the sample from the bag at the sample port
- Fill an Isolator tube or SPS tube with 10 mL
- Make cytospin gram stain slide with several drops of the fluid from the syringe.

Specimen Stability
For internal specimens:
Ambient: Forward to lab promptly, maintain sterility.
For outside sites sending specimen to RCH:
Refrigerated: Forward promptly, maintain sterility.
