Test Code LAB891 Semen Analysis, Post Vasectomy

Important Note

INTENDED USE

Post vasectomy semen analysis (PVSA) is used to confirm the effectiveness of a vasectomy postoperatively.

Following a vasectomy, sperm may be found in the semen for 6 weeks to 3 months or longer. Regular ejaculation (every 3-4 days) may eliminate sperm from the reproductive tract more quickly.

The sample should be collected 6-12 weeks after vasectomy or after more than 15 ejaculations.

A negative result from 1 well-mixed post vasectomy semen specimen generally indicates that use of contraception is no longer necessary. Occasional cases have been reported where PVSA shows intermittent presence of rare nonmotile sperm (RNMS) in the semen. Recanalization or incomplete 1-sided transaction may be the cause.
