Quantitative determination of iron levels in human serum or plasma to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as iron deficiency anemia, hemochromatosis, and chronic renal disease

Specimen Requirements

Preferred: Plasma (heparinized)

Container/tube: Lt green/mint top (lithium heparin) tube

 

Acceptable: Serum

Container: Plain, red-top or gold, serum gel tube

 

Specimen Volume: 1.0 mL (minimum volume 0.52 mL)

 

Collection Instructions: Separate serum/plasma from cells promptly. Forward promptly. Avoid hemolysis and lipemia. 

Specimen Stability

Refrigerated (preferred): 7 days

Ambient: 4 days
