Specimen Requirements

Sample Type

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

CSF specimens should be collected via lumbar puncture, and should not be centrifuged. 

ALL specimens must be set up for culture before meningitis panel is performed.  If a culture has not been ordered, contact provider for an order.  

Sample Container: 

Sterile CSF collection tubes  (Tube #3) 

Minimum Sample Volume:  200 µL of CSF sample is required for testing.

Stability:  Specimens should be processed and tested as soon as possible, though they may be stored for up to one day at room temperature or under refrigeration for up to seven days.
