Intended Use

The Xpert Carba-R Assay is intended as an aid to infection control in the detection of carbapenem-non-susceptible bacteria that colonize patients in healthcare settings. The assay is performed on rectal swabs from patients for intestinal colonization with carbapenem-non-susceptible bacteria.

Specimen Requirements

Rectal swab must be collected using a Cepheid collection device (red-capped dual swab).  Contact Rapid City Hospital laboratory to obtain this swab for collection.

 

Collection Instructions:

  1. Open the Cepheid Collection Device by peeling back the outer packaging.
  2. Carefully insert both swab tips approximately 1 cm beyond the anal sphincter and rotate gently. Highly soiled swabs are unacceptable for Xpert Carba-R testing.
  3. Remove the plastic transport tube. Twist off the tube cap and discard it. Place the swabs into the plastic transport tube. make sure the red cap is on tightly.  Note; the swabs should stay attached to the red cap at all times.
